When you're driving around, dont forget to keep your eyes open. You never know when you might happen upon a shade-tree barbecue stand or a little shack that nobody's ever heard of -- with the best smoked meat in creation.
ssweeney's Review of Smittys Bar-BQ
Weighted Overall
Main Fare:
- Brisket is moist and falling apart... but chewy. Probably has been held for a while. Clean flavors, but no rub.
- Sausage is a commercial product (Hillshire Farms?).
- Rib is tasty. Falling off the bone, but there are multiple textures in this piece. Chewy on the finish.
- Hot Link has a mushy texture. It is salty, with a spice that has a little afterburn.
Other Fare:
- Potato salad is mostly mashed with a few small chunks. Good flavor.
- Slaw is minced. Tastes like KFC.
- Pintos are good.
- Cobblers are good, but the blackberry is better than the peach.
Atmosphere:
- Two DPS cruisers in the parking lot. Troopers like it.
- Small joint closes at 1pm on Saturday, and we make it just in time.
- Friendly owner shows us around. He has an old masonry pit that he has mostly stopped using due to maintenance requirements. He now uses a Souther Pride gasser which sits directly across from his brick pit.
